The Foster Family
The story is told from several perspectives — Julia’s as the biological child, her parents Ewa and Lennart’s, and Patrik’s as a child placed in their care.
If you would like to watch the film privately, it is available to rent directly. If you work in foster care, social services or a related field, the film can instead be ordered as a complete educational package, including the film together with a study guide and discussion materials developed specifically for training and educational use.
A private rental licence is for personal viewing only. Any use of the film for training, induction or professional supervision within an organisation — for example, as part of training for foster carers — requires an educational package.

When a child is placed in foster care, it is not only the life of the child and the adults that changes. The whole family is affected.

Julia always said that her upbringing as a biological child in a foster family was a happy time. But something is wrong. In The Foster Family, we follow director Julia's journey back in time, where she, together with her parents Ewa and Lennart and the foster child Patrik, recollect the shocking events that changed their lives over thirty years ago. The children are at the center of this strong, touching and warm documentary about a system where you can love, but not too much.
